From Studies to Real-World Skills
When you’ve studied ICT but still feel unprepared for the real world, it’s easy to wonder, “What now?”
That’s exactly where Gugulethu Mngomezulu found herself after completing her studies in Application Development Technology in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal. She had the theory, the passion, and the drive. But what she really wanted was structure, mentorship, and real-world coding experience. That’s when Zaio entered the picture.
In this student spotlight, we’ll explore how Gugulethu used Zaio’s hands-on bootcamp to build full-stack skills, overcome imposter syndrome and take big strides toward becoming an industry-ready developer.
Meet Gugulethu: From Empangeni, KZN
“I’m from Empangeni, KZN,” Gugulethu shares proudly. “And I’ve always been passionate about building solutions through code.”
After completing her studies in ICT, she was eager to keep learning, but not just through theory. She wanted something practical. Something that made her feel like she was really building. Zaio’s online coding bootcamp offered just that. A structured program designed to bridge the gap between academics and the tech industry.
Why Zaio? Bridging the Gap Between Study and Career
What makes someone pick Zaio out of all the coding bootcamps in South Africa?
For Gugulethu, it came down to three things:
- Structure: “I wanted something that gave me direction, not just endless tutorials.”
- Practical Projects: “Zaio offered actual project-based learning. That mattered to me.”
- Real-World Readiness: “It’s not just about code, it’s about learning to collaborate and problem-solve like you’re in a real company.”
This is exactly what Zaio’s bootcamps are designed for. From our Full Stack Web Development Bootcamp to Data Science. Our goal is to prepare students not just to code, but to contribute in real teams and companies.
Learning the Zaio Way: Challenges + Highs
Let’s be real, bootcamp life isn’t all sunshine and push notifications.
Gugulethu’s experience has been one of the growth through challenges.
“There were moments where I hit a wall,” she admits. “Some bugs just wouldn’t budge and other times I’d misread instructions and complicate something simple.”
But those same challenges became her biggest teachers.
“The highs were completing projects that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Every time I got through a sprint, I could actually see how far I’d come.”
Example: Debugging in Real Life
In one particular sprint, Gugulethu needed to extract specific years from a SQL data table. What started off as a simple query turned into a frustrating loop of wrong answers. Until she found clarity by rereading the brief (for the tenth time!) and discovering the magic of the distinct function.
That’s what growth looks like: hitting the wall, stepping back, and breaking through during difficult times.
Key Skills Gained
So, what kind of skills has Gugulethu developed through her time at Zaio?
Full-stack project experience
Team-based coding and collaboration
Debugging and problem-solving skills
Confidence in SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more
Agile development practices
These aren’t just lines on a CV, they’re real-world competencies that companies look for when hiring junior developers.
And in Gugulethu’s case, these skills are backed by the ability to talk about the journey. That’s extremely powerful.
Personal Growth: Confidence & Problem-Solving
When asked what she’s most proud of, Gugulethu doesn’t hesitate:
“I’ve grown in confidence, especially in how I approach problems. I think more like a developer now. I’ve learned how to step back, debug, and tackle things systematically.”
That mindset shift is a key part of becoming industry-ready.
At Zaio Institute of Technology, we don’t just train coders, we help people grow into professionals. Whether it’s through mastering GitHub collaborations, working in agile sprints, or learning how to Google like a pro, our students develop the habits that define successful tech careers.
Advice for Other Students: Keep Going No Matter The Challenge
To those just starting out or feeling stuck, Gugulethu offers simple but solid advice:
- Don’t fear mistakes: “The moments you struggle the most, are where you’ll grow the most.”
- Stick with it: “Consistency really is everything. There were days I didn’t feel like logging in, but I did. That’s where progress comes from.”
- Ask questions: “Your community is your secret weapon. Use it.”
This mindset is echoed across our Zaio community, where hundreds of students share wins, ask questions, and support each other through the journey.
What’s Next?
For Gugulethu, the journey is just beginning.
She’s now looking to apply her full-stack skills in real-world projects, internships, or junior dev roles, building not just code, but a career.
