From a Gap Year to Data Science: Abdurrahmaan Tayob’s Journey at Zaio Institute of Technology

Discover how Abdurrahmaan Tayob used his gap year to build real-world data science skills at Zaio Institute of Technology through hands-on learning.

Turning a Gap Year Into a Growth Year

Taking a gap year can go one of two ways: it can become a period of growth, or it can quietly pass by without much progress. For Abdurrahmaan Tayob, that uncertainty was the exact reason he decided to act early.

“I knew that if I didn’t do something structured, I’d become lazy,” he explains. “So I started looking for opportunities that would actually challenge me.”

That search led him to Zaio Institute of Technology, unexpectedly through social media.

“I was scrolling on Instagram when I came across a Zaio reel,” Abdurrahmaan says. “It mentioned that graduates are supported with interview opportunities, which immediately caught my attention.”

After researching multiple bootcamps, he noticed a pattern: Zaio consistently stood out for its strong reviews, practical learning style, and real-world focus.

“I learn best through examples and challenges,” he adds. “Zaio’s approach matched that perfectly.”

Why Abdurrahmaan Chose Zaio

Abdurrahmaan didn’t join the bootcamp with a long checklist of expectations. Instead, he set one clear goal for himself:

Do my best and aim for high performance.

Zaio’s learning model helped him do exactly that.

Rather than relying on theory alone, the programme pushes students to:

  • Work through real-world challenges
  • Learn through examples and demos
  • Research independently (just like in a real tech role)

“Zaio doesn’t just teach you skills,” Abdurrahmaan explains. “It forces you to upskill. You’re constantly learning better and more efficient ways to solve problems.”

This learning style helped him stay engaged, motivated, and accountable throughout the programme.

Inside the Data Science Programme

Abdurrahmaan completed the Data Science programme at Zaio, which is structured around two core modules designed to build both technical and analytical confidence.

Data Science Fundamentals

The first module focuses on building strong foundations in:

  • Data cleaning
  • Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA)
  • Data visualisation
  • Data-driven thinking

This quickly became Abdurrahmaan’s favourite part of the programme.

“Data visualisation stood out for me,” he says. “Seeing data represented visually makes it easier to understand patterns and insights. It helps you guide your code and your project goals in the right direction.”

Instead of guessing what the data means, he learned how to use visuals to inform decisions, a crucial skill for any data professional.

Machine Learning Foundations

The second module introduced Abdurrahmaan to:

  • Machine learning algorithms
  • Model building concepts
  • Applying ML techniques to real datasets

Together, the two modules helped him understand the full data pipeline, from raw data to meaningful insights.

Learning Through Real-World Challenges

One of the biggest differences Abdurrahmaan noticed at Zaio was the emphasis on problem-solving over memorisation.

“You’re given tasks that don’t have step-by-step answers,” he explains. “You’re forced to research, test ideas, and figure things out, which is exactly what happens in real jobs.”

This approach reignited something personal for him.

“I love puzzles and difficult challenges,” he says. “Zaio boosted that love. I found myself searching in places I’d never looked before just to find answers.”

Rather than feeling overwhelmed, the challenge became motivating.

The Biggest Challenge: Overthinking

Despite the progress, the journey wasn’t without obstacles.

“For me, the hardest part was overthinking tasks,” Abdurrahmaan admits. “In coding, overthinking can lead to overly complicated solutions and unnecessary errors.”

As someone who enjoys complex problem-solving, he often found himself chasing difficult solutions before discovering simpler ones.

Through feedback, practice, and repeated projects, he learned an important lesson:

Good code is often simple, clear, and intentional.

That mindset shift became one of the most valuable takeaways from the programme.

How Zaio Helped Him Grow

Looking back, Abdurrahmaan sees clear growth beyond just technical skills.

Through the programme, he developed:

  • A stronger analytical mindset
  • Better problem breakdown strategies
  • Confidence in tackling unfamiliar challenges
  • Discipline in researching and learning independently

“Zaio made me think differently,” he reflects. “It taught me how to approach problems in a structured way instead of rushing toward answers.”

What started as a way to stay productive during a gap year became a foundational step into data science.

Final Reflections on the Journey

For Abdurrahmaan Tayob, joining Zaio wasn’t just about learning tools, it was about learning how to learn.

“Zaio helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect,” he says. “It challenged me, pushed me, and made me better at solving problems.”

His story is proof that with the right guidance, structure, and mindset, even a gap year can become a launchpad into a tech career.
